LAKEWOOD — History will have to wait.

Mercer Island’s girls soccer team was 13 minutes from its first state championship, but couldn’t hold the lead and eventually lost to Columbia River of Vancouver 2-1 via shootout Saturday at Harry Lang Stadium.

In their first state tournament since 2004, the 12th-ranked Islanders (15-4-1) earned the program’s third runner-up finish.

"It was a special run. It was a special group of girls and I’m going to miss them," said Islanders coach Adam Gervis. "Getting this far is a big deal."

Senior goalkeeper Teagan Ryan of the No. 11 Chieftains (16-4-2) made two saves in the shootout, which Columbia River won 3-2, and stopped countless other shots in regulation and overtime.

Ryan said her team embraced the role of an underdog throughout the tournament.

"We have nothing to lose, so we go out and we play hard and no one expects us to win," she said. "It makes it that much better when we do."

Gervis called Ryan "the difference" in the game. Chieftains coach Colleen McKinney agreed.

"Teagan Ryan has greatness in her, and she just needed a moment to shine," said McKinney.

The Islanders took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when Mary Hill’s cross bounced in the penalty box to Erin Bourguignon, who fired a hard shot past Ryan.

The Chieftains, who were without recently injured star Robin McGuire, tied the score at 1-1 in the 67th minute when Kellianne Swenson leapt to head in a cross from Hannah Kimsey.

The Islanders had two great chances to win in overtime, but each was turned away by Ryan.

"I think we dominated the play, we just couldn’t get another one in," Gervis said.

In the shootout, Mercer Island freshman goalkeeper Corey Goelz made two saves, but the Chieftains converted their other three kicks for the win.

It was the second straight comeback win in as many days for Columbia River, each by shootout.

"I just tell my girls to believe every time," McKinney said.

Said Ryan: "I’m so proud of our team. We’ve come so far this year and that was the perfect way to end it. This is the happiest day of my life."

Third-place game

Olivia Lovell scored the only goal in 24th minute on an assist from Kristen Berry to give the No. 5 Papermakers the win in their first trophy finish since winning state in 2005. Camas (16-4-1) had lost in the first round the last three years. The No. 3 Rams (17-5) earned their eighth trophy in 17 state trips.
